STUDENTS FROM THE DEGREE IN EAST ASIAN STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MÁLAGA PARTICIPATE IN THE XII KOREA WEEK
Students from the Degree in East Asian Studies at the University of Málaga participated in the XII Korea Week organized by the Department of East Asian Studies, which took place between November 21st and 24th, 2023. The cultural activities they participated in were as follows:
- On Wednesday, November 22nd, they held a poetry reading about gisaeng at the Ateneo de Málaga.
- On Friday, November 24th, the students performed the popular novel “The Song of Chun-hyang” (춘향전) and participated in a gala of Korean music and dance performances where they showcased their skills.




WORKSHOP "WHAT I KNOW," WITH THE KOREAN CULTURAL CENTER AND KANG IK JOONG
Artist Kang Ik Joong invited students from around the world to collaborate in creating an artistic installation using squares that included Hangul syllables. Students shared their knowledge and expressed their thoughts and feelings about the Korean alphabet for the celebration of Hangeul Day.
The final result consisted of three artistic panels made up of a total of 6,072 colorful syllabic blocks. The installation was exhibited at the Korean Cultural Center from October 19th, 2023, to January 10th, 2024, showcasing people’s connection with Korean writing through collective knowledge.


4TH YEAR STUDENTS FROM THE DEGREE IN EAST ASIAN STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MÁLAGA PARTICIPATE IN THE SYMPOSIUM "WOMEN, EQUALITY, AND SLAVERY" WITH THE PERFORMANCE "THE GAME OF LIFE"
4th-year students from the Degree in East Asian Studies at the University of Málaga (UMA), from the subject “Popular and Contemporary Culture in Korea,” participated on March 23rd in the Symposium “Women, Equality, and Slavery,” organized by the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Málaga.
The cultural activity “The Game of Life” took place at the Faculty of Education Sciences of the UMA, under the direction of Prof. Eun Kyun Kang as part of the Kareidoscopio company.
The main purpose of this performance is to raise awareness about the inequality issues that are still present today, through different games with a single winner.

3RD YEAR STUDENTS FROM THE DEGREE IN EAST ASIAN STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MÁLAGA (UMA) PARTICIPATE IN THE 2021 SEOUL INTERNATIONAL WRITERS' FESTIVAL
3rd-year students from the Degree in East Asian Studies at the University of Málaga (UMA), from the subject “Korean Literature through its Texts,” participated in the 2021 Seoul International Writers’ Festival. This event stands as one of the major national literature and cultural festivals and is held internationally with the aim of bridging global literature with Korean literature. The activity was organized by Professors Eun Kyung Kang and Aurelia Martín from the Department of East Asian Studies.
This year, the students participated by reading the work “The Number One World” by Kim Kichang and subsequently working on it.
During the session, students offered their opinions and personal perspectives and asked questions about the work directed to the author. Additionally, a group of students had the opportunity to make a video and send their comments and questions to the writer.
The activity is part of the set of activities carried out by UMA to promote Korean literature through Essay Contests on Korean Literature and other activities related to Korean culture and art for more than 14 years.


STUDENTS FROM THE DEGREE IN EAST ASIAN STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MÁLAGA PERFORM A SERIES OF PERFORMATIVE SHOWS BASED ON GENDER EQUALITY CLAIMS IN SOUTH KOREA
On Tuesday, October 5th, students from the Degree in East Asian Studies with a Mention in Korea at the University of Málaga performed a series of performative shows based on gender equality claims in Korea.
The performances are the result of work in several sessions of the training workshop “Research with a Gender Perspective in the Framework of Korean Studies: Building Creative Spaces of Understanding.” During the workshop, participating students received general training on researching with a gender perspective, and specific training on the topic in relation to South Korea. They also received training on setting up performative actions, communication for social action, and feminist claims in South Korea.
As a result, 6 pieces were created, with central themes being women as objects of sexualization, gender-based violence, and breaking away from normative standards.
