Project Building the Future: Korean Studies Postgraduate Program and Research Development at the University of Malaga

PROJECT CONTEXT

Currently, the AKS (Academy of Korean Studies), a renowned academic institution dedicated exclusively to Korean Studies, is collaborating with the University of Málaga through what is known as the Seed Program for Korean Studies. This program is awarded to prestigious universities around the world with the aim of strengthening Korean Studies programs at those institutions.

At the University of Málaga, the project emerged from the need to take Korean Studies to the next level, after having laid the groundwork for this field in Spain. To achieve this, two key issues are being addressed: the lack of master’s programs and the fragmentation within the field of Korean Studies in Spain.

Thus, the two main goals of this collaborative program are the creation of an official Master’s degree in Korean Studies and the establishment of research teams that will help build a stable academic community focused on Korean Studies in the Spanish-speaking world.

PROJECT OBJETIVES

Create a Solid Research Group in Korean Studies

Strengthen research and postgraduate studies in the field of Korean Studies at the University of Málaga and in Spain through, on one hand, the creation of postgraduate academic programs, and on the other, by supporting researchers and PhD students at the University of Málaga.

Establish a Postgraduate Program in Korean Studies

Since the graduation of the first cohort of the East Asian Studies – Korean Track degree at the University of Málaga in 2014/2015, the need to establish a program for students wishing to continue their training in Korean Studies—whether from an academic or professional perspective—has become evident.

For this reason, the University of Málaga is focusing all its efforts on developing a Master’s program in Korean Studies.

Create a Strong Research Group in Korean Studies

In order to promote the training of young researchers in Korean Studies, the project annually awards two research grants to outstanding master’s students interested in starting an academic career. Additionally, a postgraduate student group in Korean Studies has been created to share experiences, foster collaboration, and provide support for research projects.
