PATH TO EQUALITY: KOREAN STUDIES NETWORK ON INCLUSION

PROJECT CONTEXT

This project will work on several lines in parallel because of their level of interrelation. First, the project will develop postgraduate studies in Korean Studies at the University of Malaga, mainly at the doctoral level. The objective is to facilitate the training of the next generation of Korean Studies specialists in Spanish-speaking countries. Secondly, and closely related to the first, we will work on the approach and consolidation of a line of research focused on slavery and marginalized groups in Korea from which to develop. This research will be developed by a multidisciplinary group and from a comparative perspective, in order to bring the debates on slavery and marginality in Korean Studies into contact with other fields. The present research project focuses on the exploration of the different processes of liberation of private slaves and their social careers, as well as the progressive integration of women in the public sphere. To this end, studies will be developed on the different mechanisms of domination inherent in slavery and the subordinate situation of women, and the struggle to overcome this situation of domination, from an individual or collective point of view. In this way, the project will contribute to our knowledge of Korean social and cultural history.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • To develop levels of postgraduate studies in Korean Studies at the University of Malaga in official degrees.
  • To train the next generation of specialists in Korean Studies.
  • Consolidate the teaching and research staff associated with Korean Studies at the University of Malaga by opening a new full-time position in Korean Studies and supporting the promotion of a current member of the Korean Studies Area.
  • Develop and consolidate a line of research on equality and inclusion.
  • To develop a network of scholars interested in the topic of equality and inclusion within Korean Studies and in other areas of knowledge.

PROJECT BUILDING THE FUTURE: KOREAN STUDIES POSTGRADUATE PROGRAM AND RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MALAGA

PROJECT CONTEXT:

Currently, the AKS (Academy of Korean Studies), a renowned academic institution dedicated exclusively to Korean Studies, is collaborating with the University of Málaga through what is known as the Seed Program for Korean Studies. This program is awarded to prestigious universities around the world with the aim of strengthening Korean Studies programs at those institutions.

At the University of Málaga, the project emerged from the need to take Korean Studies to the next level, after having laid the groundwork for this field in Spain. To achieve this, two key issues are being addressed: the lack of master’s programs and the fragmentation within the field of Korean Studies in Spain.

Thus, the two main goals of this collaborative program are the creation of an official Master’s degree in Korean Studies and the establishment of research teams that will help build a stable academic community focused on Korean Studies in the Spanish-speaking world.

PROJECT OBJETIVES:

  • Create a Solid Research Group in Korean Studies

Strengthen research and postgraduate studies in the field of Korean Studies at the University of Málaga and in Spain through, on one hand, the creation of postgraduate academic programs, and on the other, by supporting researchers and PhD students at the University of Málaga.

  • Establish a Postgraduate Program in Korean Studies

Since the graduation of the first cohort of the East Asian Studies – Korean Track degree at the University of Málaga in 2014/2015, the need to establish a program for students wishing to continue their training in Korean Studies—whether from an academic or professional perspective—has become evident.

For this reason, the University of Málaga is focusing all its efforts on developing a Master’s program in Korean Studies.

  • Create a Strong Research Group in Korean Studies

In order to promote the training of young researchers in Korean Studies, the project annually awards two research grants to outstanding master’s students interested in starting an academic career. Additionally, a postgraduate student group in Korean Studies has been created to share experiences, foster collaboration, and provide support for research projects.

  • Develop Academic Research in Korean Studies
