On June 20, the Introductory Course in Korean–Spanish Translation began at the Faculty of Social Studies and Labour at the University of Málaga. The course was organized by the East Asian Studies section of the Department of Historical Sciences at the University of Málaga and the Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea).

The aim of this initiative was to provide specialized training to those interested in the field of Korean-to-Spanish literary translation and to help form a new generation of Korean–Spanish translators. During the course, the thirteen participating students regularly translated the short story “The Sad Fishbowl” (슬픈 어항) by renowned South Korean author Kim Soom. Upon completion of the translation and its revision, a bilingual edition of the story was announced for publication.

The course was taught by Professor Antonio J. Doménech, from the East Asian Studies section at the University of Málaga and an expert in Korean–Spanish translation. One of the sessions also featured the participation of the author herself in an online format.

To mark the course’s opening, Alicia Relinque, a specialist in Chinese literary translation and tenured professor at the University of Granada, delivered a lecture titled “On Literary Translation (or on the Impossibility of Untranslatability),” offering an introduction to the challenges of translating languages as distant from Spanish as Chinese or Korean.

The course concluded on July 13 with a literary evening held at the Ateneo de Málaga at 7:30 PM, featuring a dramatized reading of the translated story along with musical and dance performances.
