Dr. Aurelia Martín Casares. Ph.D in Histoire et Civilizations, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, París. Professor at the East Asian Studies Bachelor Degree at the University of Málaga, Spain. Specialized in Korean Studies, Historical Anthropology and Gender Studies. Since 2017 she has been a member of the UNESCO International Scientific Committee (Human and Social Sciences-Slave Route). Research stays at internationally renowned centers (Universities of Toulouse Le Mirail, British Columbia in Vancouver, Queen Mary-Univ. of London, EHESS-Paris, etc). Director of Research Projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, the Agency for International Cooperation (Spain), the Junta de Andalucía (Regional Government), etc. Director of the East Asian Women Studies Network of the University of Málaga. Research collaborator in projects funded by the Academy of Korean Studies and European Union. Author of books and book chapters published by Presses Universitaires de la Sorbonne, Cambridge University Press; Harmattan-París, Peter Lang, Iberoamericana-Vervuert, etc). Author of articles in international peer-reviewed impact journals (Seoul Journal of Korean Studies, Visual Anthropology, Slavery & Abolition, Anthropological Notebooks, Renaissance and Reformation, European History Quarterly, etc) She speaks English, Italian and French, and has knowledge of Korean and Arabic, she has given lectures at numerous international universities (Incheon National University-Seoul, Ca Foscary-Univ. Venice, Univ. Nova de Lisboa, CUNY-New York, Univ. of Oxford, Univ. Nice, Univ.Tunisia, Queen Mary and CILAVS in London, etc.). In 2016, she published a book promoting the story of Juan Latino, the first Afro-European humanist. In recent years, her research and publications are focused on Korean Studies and the East Asian field.

She coordinates the “Network of Women’s Studies in East Asia: China, Japan and Korea” with the participation of the Autonomous University of Madrid, the University of Granada, the Rovira y Virgili University, the University of Valencia and the University of Malaga.

She has led, as Responsible Researcher (PI), 5 R&D projects and 1 Network of Excellence of the National Research Plan (MEC, MICCIN, MINECO), 3 contracts of the Andalusian Research Plan, and 1 project of Inter-university Cooperation (AECI). Collaborating Researcher in 3 projects of the National R&D Plan (MTAS, MICCIN). She has also been a collaborating researcher in 3 Research Initiation Projects, FECYT (FCT 12-3252). Partner of 1 Project of the 5th European Framework Program, led by the Université de Liége, and has also been part of the research team of 2 Projects of the Ministère des Affaires Étrangéres, France (Programe EGIDE). ANEP evaluator.

 

She has published articles in Spanish, English, French and Italian in international indexed journals. She has also published book chapters in English (Cambridge University Press, Peter Lang Academic Publishing, etc.) and French (Presses Universitaires de la Sorbonne, L’Harmattan). Reviewed in journals of international relevance. Reviewer of articles for journals such as “Renaissance & Reformation”, “European History Quarterly”, etc.

 

She has carried out research stays in prestigious international centers (University of British Columbia-Vancouver, UCL, EHESS-Paris, Queen Mary College-London, Université de Toulouse Le Mirail, etc).

 

She has lectured at numerous international universities and has participated in more than 40 national and international conferences, as a speaker and lecturer, at academic institutions such as the University of Oxford, the College of Spain in Paris, College University of New York (CUNY), the University of Cambridge, the Université de Nice, the Université de Tunis, Birkbeck College-London, etc.

 

She speaks, writes and reads English, French and Italian fluently and has studied classical Arabic (Lcda. in Arabic Philology). She reads and writes Korean.

 

She is currently a member of the Advisory Committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for an exhibition on the portrait of Juan de Pareja (Velázquez), which opened in 2023.
