Luis A. Botella, professor in the Area of East Asian Studies at the University of Málaga, has published an article in the international platform The Conversation analyzing the role of the media in managing the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea.

Based on a study of over 600 articles from the country’s leading newspapers —Chosun Ilbo and Hankyeoraeh— the research highlights how, despite ideological differences, both outlets agreed on key public health measures such as mask-wearing and social distancing, and identified the central government as the main authority in charge of managing the health crisis.

The article emphasizes that this media convergence helped create social consensus and encourage responsible public behavior. Transparent government communication and South Korea’s previous experiences with epidemics like MERS also played a crucial role in the country’s effective response.

The publication underscores the importance of the media in building trust and social cohesion during public health emergencies.
